MBC Band Press Release August 2023

MBC Band has topped off another successful term with a stellar performance at St Mary’s Church, Newmarket.

Run by Exning-based charity Music Builds Communities and conducted by local musician Alice Haylock, the Band’s aim is not only to make music together but to let each individual grow as a musician in a supportive, friendly environment.

“I wanted my music students – particularly the adults – to have an opportunity to play as part of a group,” says Alice. “Playing in an ensemble really helps to build your note-reading and listening skills. It’s also great fun; probably the best part about playing an instrument!”

MBC Band is always looking for new members, and almost all instrumentalists are welcome.

“I arrange each part to suit the individual player. Beginner didgeridoo? No problem – if you can read simple notation, I’ll have a part ready for you,” Alice beams. “We’re all about inclusivity and adaptability.”

Wondering whether MBC Band could be for you? We asked some current members about their experience.

1. What instrument do you play? How long have you been learning?

Gary (57): Tenor saxophone. Been learning since 1987, with a big break in the middle!

John (70): Clarinet, about 15 years.

Isabelle (17): Flute, 8 years.

Matt (51) & daughter Adelia (9): I have been playing the bass guitar on and off for about 20 years. My daughter has been learning the clarinet for 18 months.

Louise (38): Alto saxophone; I've been taking lesson for 18 months.

2. Were you nervous to play in your first Band rehearsal?

Louise: I was very nervous to the point I was shaking. Once we started playing though I started to relax and by the end of rehearsal I was enjoying myself. It's a very friendly and welcoming group!

3. What do you like about MBC Band?

Gary: Learning new pieces, and playing with a diverse group of instruments and people.

Isabelle: Playing as a group, which makes music more interesting.

Matt: It is helping me to learn to read music, which I’ve wished to do since I was a child. I also like playing and performing in a different ensemble than a rock band. I like sharing the experience with my daughter.

Louise: It pushes me as a person and as a musician to do things I never thought I could do. It has given me a lot more confidence in myself and my instrument.

4. What has been your favourite piece to play with the Band so far?

Isabelle: The Planets suite by Holst, which we played for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Matt & Adelia: Fly Me to the Moon. Alice arranged a nice walking bass line. It is a strong part for a rhythm instrument and I need to keep strict timing for the rest of the ensemble to set their parts to. I appreciate the responsibility!

Adelia chose Sarabande (Handel). She really likes her part and how it fits into the piece.

 5. If you could add any new member to the Band, which instrument would they play?

Gary: Drums!

John: Probably a drum set, or bassoon. We need more strings too.

Louise: More string instruments and a drummer would be excellent additions to the band.

MBC Band will recommence for the Autumn term on Sunday 8th October, with rehearsals every two weeks leading up to a (optional) Christmas performance.
